Supervised visitation is when a parent has to be supervised while making visits to their child or children. The visits could be supervised by a professional court monitor, or a mutual third party. It would have to be specified in the court order. California family courts will order supervised visitation when it is in the best interest of children whose parents have a custody or visitation dispute. This sort of visitation can be ordered by the judge for a variety of reasons. Safety issues such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, substance abuse, neglect, child abuse, parental concerns of mental illness, and/or a parental threat of abduction could cause for court ordered supervised visitation. A parent could be absent for a long period of time and may need a reintroduction, or they may need to be introduced to their child because there has been no existing relationship between them prior. These two reasons will also cause for the judge to order supervised visits. It may or may not be mandatory that the visiting parent, or the NCP (non-custodial parent), to submit declarations to the court from the professional court monitor. Consistent reports that detail visits with no complications, could open up additional visitation time and/or eventually allow the NCP to have unsupervised visits.
